With economic growth and increasing populations in emerging countries, particularly in the ASEAN region, the demand for appropriate and effective health services is rising rapidly. In this context, medical devices tailored to local healthcare settings are essential to improving access to quality healthcare.
The SMEDO project (Supporting business plan of Medical Equipment Development for Overseas based on local needs), implemented by Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Japan Institute for Health Security (JIHS)—formerly the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM)—, aims to contribute to the improvement of health services in partner countries by supporting Tokyo- based small- to medium-sized medical device manufacturers in developing and adapting products that address specific local health needs.
This initiative emphasizes collaboration with local health institutions and stakeholders to understand clinical practices, healthcare infrastructure, and the realities of frontline service delivery. By doing so, it supports the co-development of appropriate technologies that can directly benefit the health and well-being of local populations.
